The Austrian Winter Pea (Pisum sativum subsp. arvense), sometimes called a “black pea” or “field pea”, is a fall-seed annual legume. Often called an “ice cream” plant for deer because they are so highly sought after.
As their name implies, winter peas are very cold tolorant and stay green late into the season. They are a high quality forage for deer and also very high in protein. (25-30%!)
Vulnerable to early grazing they are best planted with other annuals rather than on their own. See Autumn Quick Plot
Broadcast seeding rate is 30-40 lbs/acre, cover 1/2 inch. Fertilize with 300-400 lbs of 0-20-20
