Sugar Beets

Sugar Beets are one of the best late season crops you can plant in a food plot for deer. They have the highest digestibility of any forage and cool weather increases the sugar content in the root. Like turnips, deer will typically eat the leaves first, then return for the bulbs.

That being said, sugar beets can be difficult to grown and may not be the best choice for the first time food plotter. They germinate and grow slowly at first so weed control is an issue. They do not compete well with weeds and repeated applications of herbicides might be needed until they establish a canopy of leaves.

Plant in the Spring, 8 lbs/acre. Fertilize with 300-400lbs of 19-19-19.
